This survey, which gathered responses from 850 instructors and over 2,000 students across North America, uncovers a notable trend: an overwhelming number of educators (96%) suspect that some students have engaged in cheating over the past year. This marks a staggering increase from the 72% reported just two years prior in 2021. The findings suggest a growing anxiety among educators that academic integrity is increasingly under threat due to advancements in AI technology.

Moreover, the student perspective mirrors these concerns. Over half of the respondents (53%) noted a rise in cheating, with a worrying 23% indicating there has been a substantial increase. The primary catalyst identified by nearly half of the students (47%) is the advent of AI tools that facilitate dishonest behavior, particularly citing ChatGPT as a significant influence in their ability to cheat.

As the landscape of education evolves, the consequences of AI on academic integrity cannot be overlooked. With 68% of instructors fearing that AI could detrimentally affect academic honesty in the next three years, there is an urgent need for a collaborative approach to mitigate these risks. Recognizing that AI is not going away anytime soon, both students and instructors have started to embrace its potential for enhancing learning experiences. However, the dual challenge remains: how can educators create an environment that deters cheating while actively leveraging AI's benefits?
